We have had inquiries regarding what is the best tool to use to cut Hoop Wire. We have tried several and here is what we have found.
H.K. Porter 7-1/2 in. Pocket Wire Rope and Cable Cutters Made in the USA
These are the best cutters that we have found. They are small enough to easily hold and don't require a lot of strength to cut hoop wire or spiral boning. If you are struggling to cut the hoop wire or are having to use both hands or multiple cuts, these are the answer.
After months of usage, there isn't any sign of wear on the cutting surface.
Amazon and Home Depot have these for the same price. Some Home Depot stores don't have them on the shelf. Their website shows which stores carry them. If your store doesn't, they ship free to your local store where you can pick them up.
Klein Tools HD2000-9NE High-Leverage Side-Cutting Pliers Heavy-Duty Cutting 2000 Series Red 9-Inches Made in the USA
These work very well but not quite as well as the HK Porter Cutters and require more hand strength. Home Depot and Amazon both sell them and Home Depot is a few dollars less expensive.
ION TOOL 8" Wire Rope & Cable Cutter Made in China
These worked really well for about 24 cuts then the bolt fell out. After reassembling them, the spring won't stay connected and the cutting edge has wear marks and chips. Amazon has them for $11.99. We do not recommend these.
Of course, there are many more cutting tools than the examples shown here. We also have tested with some low end tools from Harbor Freight that just plain didn't work. If you have a favorite, please let us know what you prefer.
